On Wednesday, 5 October 2016 experts from across the energy industry spoke at the third annual Alfa Energy conference, The Energy Market – Today & Beyond Brexit, which took place at the Royal Society in London.
Those in attendance gained insight into where the UK’s energy markets would be heading following the recent Brexit referendum.
“The decision [to leave] will be made without a plan for the future, in the same way that the UK started the deregulation of the UK electricity market in 1990 without a plan,” said John Hall, Chairman, Alfa Energy Group. “The UK energy markets are entwined with its own and EU legislation, and the process of unravelling will take time to understand while the subsequent restructuring will take more time to set up and implement … [T]he UK Government needs to have an actual plan on how it will extricate the UK from EU energy controls and plan for development a new grid infrastructure and lessening dependence on imported fuels before implementing the process to leave the EU.”
Among the eight speakers at this year’s event were Tom Greatrex, Former Shadow Energy Minister (2011-2015), Jeremy Nicholson of the Energy Intensive Users’ Group, Andrew Quarles of Cuadrilla Resources, Kyle Martin of Energy UK, Bill Farren-Price of Petroleum Policy Intelligence, Dr Nigel Knee of EDF Energy, Robert Williams of BT PLC, and John Kemp of Thomson Reuters.
